Elk are among the largest species in the deer family, Cervidae, and they are some of the largest terrestrial mammals that roam the range of North America as well as Central and East Asia. Elk are distinctive from other species of deer in that only the males possess velvet-covered antlers, which are used to compete with one another during mating season.
